Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area
One of America’s largest urban wetlands is right here in our city! Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area is located in North Portland and can be explored by trail like we did or by kayak or canoe.
The Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area is a natural gem hidden by warehouses and port terminals. I cannot believe we had one of the largest wetlands of the country here in Portland, and we’ve never been there.
Unquestionably we live in a beautiful city full of surprises like this place! The wildlife there is fantastic.
What to see and do
I don’t remember how exactly I found this place; however, we were greatly surprised. This Summer, we discovered so many beautiful natural areas keeping our hikes local.
It’s important to mention that you can access this location by car, bus, or bicycle if you decide to use bike lanes on Marine Drive. Although you can go on your bicycle, these are not allowed inside the wetlands. However, there is a bike rack at the trailhead. Also, from here, you can enjoy the 40 miles trail with your bike.
This Natural Area is the perfect place for those (like us) that love wildlife. To illustrate, activities like bird watching or nature photography are prevalent there.
Additionally, from mid-April through late June, you can explore the lakes with kayaks or canoes. There is a launching place where you can start your trip by water.
In our case, we explored the wetlands hiking in the Interlakes trail. Although our walk was short, it was so rich in wildlife! We saw so many birds, for instance, ducks, geese, blue herons, great egrets, ospreys, and more.
Also, if you need to take a break or just sit and enjoy nature, there are several benches along the trail.
Finally, if you want to explore more natural places similar to Smith and Bybee Wetlands, you will enjoy some or all of these options.
We are so lucky to live in Portland with natural places like this one!
