Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge Oregon

Certainly, Baskett Slough refuge is one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen. Especially as a nature lover, I’m glad that I decided to visit it with my kids after having this wildlife refuge on my bucket list for several years. And surely you will love it too!

What to see and do

Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, located in northwestern Oregon, consists of 1,173 acres of cropland; however, you will find different landscapes and habitats.

Although the primary goal of this refuge is to offer high-quality habitat for geese, especially the dusky Canada goose, it’s also the home of several other endangered and threatened animals and plants.

As a result of the wildlife available to admire (230 species of birds recorded) and the beautiful natural settings, the main activities to do in the refuge are nature photography and bird watching.

Additionally, hiking and environmental education and interpretation are some of the other activities allowed on the Refuge.

And talking about hiking, there are more than 5 miles of trails; however, it’s essential to keep in mind that some paths are seasonal. They remain closed some moths per year, letting wildlife nesting time undisturbed.

Particularly during our visit, we drove on the refuge roads that are open year-round, and where you can stop for photo opportunities. And also, we walked on the gorgeous Rich Guadagno trails. Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful trails we’ve ever hiked. Amazing views!

And last but not least, we had our picnic under a magnificent tree next to the parking lot, just off Coville Road in the middle of the refuge.

Although we were there for some hours, we couldn’t visit all the trails, so we have the perfect excuse for coming back. Additionally, we combined this visit with a short hike in the Erratic Rock State Natural Site (20 mins from there).
