Lowami Hart Woods Natural Area
Escape to the forest to enjoy Nature at its best in this gorgeous 28 acre forested and wetland Lowami Hart Woods Natural Area.
Another gem close to home! Just 30 minutes from downtown Portland you can find the Lowami Hart Woods Natural Area.
Activities
I didn’t know about the existence of this place at all until last week when I was looking at hiking areas to visit close to home. I found this one an others that we are planning to visit soon. So stay tuned!
We always appreciate these urban forests and more these days when keeping our hikes local is good practice to follow the stay-at-home order.
Also, it’s a blessing to have the option to escape for some hours from the daily tasks and enjoy nature without the necessity of long trips whenever we need it.
As I always highlight it, we are so lucky to have so many options where we live or close to it.
Hiking in the park
Now talking about the activities you can do there, hiking and wildlife viewing (especially birds), on its 1.1 miles trails is a wonderful experience and family-friendly. As a highlight there is one entire loop that is paved, so it’s accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
With my daughter we started our walk after parking in the designated area in Hart Road. In that spot, you can find accessible parking, picnic tables and portable toilets plus bike racks, a bench, and a Kiosk with park information and a map.
From there we decided to take the right path, universal access Fir Tree Loop, and we loved the giant Douglas-firs and the wildflowers. There is a large viewing deck where you can sit and relax, while you enjoy the view of the forest.
Additionally if you need to take a break or just sit and admire your surroundings, you will find several benches along the trails.
After we finished that loop we continue in the paved trail to the other trails available in the park. All of them are well maintained and signed.
We really adored the entire place especially the variety of wildflowers, trees, and birds.
However, since my daughter loves water her favorite part was a little spot on the South Johnson Creek trail where you have access to the creek under the bridge. Kids love that part.
Finally, if you are looking for other forested areas to hike locally in Portland and surrounding areas you can find more options here: urban forest.
Stay safe and happy hikes!
